The neighbor kids brought out their chalk and then we got ours and it was an art festival. We decided to trace around our bodies and each child colored in their own clothes. There were Emily, Ashley and Aaron, Cami and Brooke, Kenadee and Kole, and Jonathan.
This is the story of our family and how we came to be. Hope this brings a few smiles.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, All Saints Day, Veterans Day
As part of home school Emily and I do calendar every time. We notice the upcoming events and holidays, count how many days left in the month, figure out exactly how old she is on that day, etc. We have been learning some cool stuff about holidays I typically don't celebrate.
Rosh Hashanah Sept 9th and Yom Kippur Sept 18th.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement filled with fasting. We checked out a few books and rented a video from the library and Emily got inspired. She wanted to set her 10 goals for the new year too. Here's what she came up with as her Jewish New Year's goals. She hung up her list so she could remember.
1) Be mise To Frenss {Be nice to friends}
2) Hellq mom 8 dad owt {Help mom & dad out}
3) Be ciend {Be kind}
4) Chaej my buthr's diepr {Change my brother's diaper}
5) Do the dishis
6) Hellp my sisdr owt
7) Feed my buthr
8) Play with my bruthr
9) Play with my frens
10) Play with sisir
Ten cmamins {10 Commandments}
All Saints Day (Nov 1)
A Catholic holiday of celebrating ancestors. We talked about our ancestors; primarily my grandparents. We went on my grandma's facebook page and checked out her pics. We read a book from the library and noticed all the food they make to honor their ancestors. We celebrated our family [basically I cried happy/sad tears].
Veteran's Day (Nov 11)
Both girls were with me and we checked out the VA's website. We watched a video, we played military themed kid computer games. The girls they printed out medals and then we colored. I wrote a letter and we will be mailing them out soon. We found out that the military celebrates every 11-11 at 11am. We had also set up a lunch date with a friend at the same time.
Emily wrote to my cousin who is a naval Vet. The medal says BRAVERY. Her letter:
Dear Sarah, I hope you had a good time in the war. Love Emily and Maegan {FYI- She didn't serve in the war}
For homeschool I teach Emily on Monday and Wednesday mornings and take her to Adelaide for lunch at 12:15. Thursday I keep her home all day and Ashley joins us. Thursday seems to have a lot of fighting, which is something you don't get in a classroom of 1. Aaron knows when I am teaching and I think he hates it. He knows he is getting the backseat and he knows there is not much in the homeschool room that he can play with. He likes to push buttons on the printer or computer, empty all the things out of the cupboard (boxes of checks, stapler, CDs), or eat markers, crayons, pencil erasers, paper. He will only be pacified with coloring on paper or me reading him a story for a few minutes. A neighbor asked Emily if she liked homeschool. Of course I perked up to hear her answer. She said she did and her favorite part was reading a story and eating a snack. We always have an agenda 1) pray 2) calendar and then any number of things. We always have recess and snack w/ a story. We read Doctor Dolittle and are now on Huck Finn. We also have writing in a journal, math (Saxon workbook pages, shapes, counting, money, playing store, telling time), handwriting (usually not too much, but mostly her numbers), language structure (apostrophes, Explode the Code workbook), computer games (from a list my teacher mom), science (she is basically in her own world of creating science projects for herself every day), plants, etc. Basically whatever the heck I feel like talking about, we do it. I love it most of the time. I wonder if I'll do it next year. Or for Ashley. Then I remind myself that I don't have to know that now.

A poem for Aaron
My Brother Ate an Orange
I’m astonished that he did,
He swallowed it completely,
He’s a disconcerting kid.
My brother ate an orange,
First he chewed it for a while,
Then digested it entirely
With a silly sort of smile.
My brother ate an orange,
It’s a novel thing to do,
Then he also ate a yellow
And a purple and a blue.
Thanks to my mom for finding this. Last Friday night he went for the blue. I found it Sunday morning.

Yay Me!
Labor Day Sept 6th I did a novice triathalon. I just found my race results online. See my earlier blog entry for more details.

Overall I placed 6th, in my gender I placed 1st.
Go ME!
Faces of Aaron
For my mom who said she needed to see Aaron's face. We are just now realizing that the red spots on his cheeks and chin are not just wet skin from his sucking on his hands, but a type of rash that seems to do better when we put Emily's ezcema lotion (Aquaphor) on it.
Aaron will be 17 months on Friday the 5th. Tonight when Bryan and the kids came inside to eat dinner I asked Bryan to help Aaron wash his hands. Bryan went into kitchen and blew his nose. And Aaron? He went into the bathroom and was standing on the stool at the sink ready to wash hands. What's crazy is we don't even wash his hands in that sink very often. It's fun to see him understanding what we are saying.
He is adding to his mischeviousness every day. He knows when I say 'diaper' to run the other way. His new addition is when I catch him, he arches his back and drags his feet over to the diaper area. He also is starting to test the limits on holding still during a diaper change. Not an easy battle.
He started pulling hair this week. He was bored and tired of being in the shopping cart at Costco. Since there are 2 seats, Ashley was sitting next to him. He reached over and grabbed a fistful a few times, each time laughing at our reactions.
He is a very nervous phase about leaving his mama. But he is good if he's with dad. He does not like daycare. He loves teasing and wrestling his dad. He loves it when neighbor kids come over. He follows them around and tries to eat whatever they are playing with (which is his normal daily activity). He is finally learning how to say mama and what it means. Kind of- he still thinks I am dada. Bryan is dada too, but also Buh-Buh because that is what Bryan calls Aaron. It gets confusing.
Aaron's new words include: hat, yeah, go, light

More October fun pics
Bryan built a fort for family night in the front piano room. It was a constant battle for each sheet to stay up. For the hour it lasted, the kids had a great time playing tea party.
Outside on our back deck for a show one night.
Halloween 2010
October 23rd Bryan and I went to a costume party at a friend's house. Bryan picked for us to be Aragorn/Strider and Queen Arawen from Lord of the Rings. His favorite part was carrying around a real sword all night (borrowed from a neighbor). As we danced he learned some new dance moves with a sword and learned that it's tacky if your sword drops on the floor for being improperly buckled.
Monday night the 25th we went as a family to Thanksgiving Point to the Barnyard Boo. It's our tradition and we have learned to dress warm!
It's mostly outside games (i.e. Pin the Wart on the Witch, Bowling down Mummies Pins). This year we enjoyed a story with a witch, frosting a cookie and as always riding the ponies. It was Aaron's 2nd time on a pony and he loved it!
Friday 29th was the girl's dance class (Up With Kids) Halloween party. They wore costumes, performed and went home with more candy.
Saturday 30th was Utah's day to trick-or-treat. We went out for about 45 minutes, got soaked and came back after a fight about umbrellas with the girls. Bryan and I didn't dress up. Aaron, who is nicknamed Aar-Bear went as a bear, Ashley as a fairy and Emily as a pajama princess. That morning we carved 2 pumpkins.
Sunday the 31st I had a stroke of inspiration to create a haunted house with our candy.
We made it out of hot glue, graham crackers, peanut butter and strawberry jelly (blood). There is a pink lizards tongue hanging out the front door (Em), brown gravestones on the ground, a twisted laffy taffy tree (Em), 2 white eyeballs/smarties for the house on the roof (Ash), giant's poop on the roof (Em), and pink paving stone leading to the grave (Ash).
That night we went trick-or-treating to some friends' homes that we missed; after all it was Halloween. No trick-or-treaters came to our house on Sunday. After all the costumes and candy, I am very done with Halloween. I gave the 'good' candy away last night and ate my last two favorites tonight. Goodbye October.
